Aquatic Training Program

Monday 2 December – Wednesday 11 December 2019, 9am to 3pm 

(No training on Saturday 7 or Sunday 8 December)

Increase your employment opportunities with Willoughby City Council’s Aquatic Training Program. This eight day course will provide you with qualifications in:

  • Teacher of Swimming and Water Safety
  • Pool Lifeguard
  • CPR & First Aid

Who can participate?

To participate you should be:

17 years and over

From a culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) community ((English second language, religious affiliation)

Have a barrier to usually attend this kind of training (socio economic, transport, family commitments, age

Essential requirements

  • Some basic swimming ability (200m) and be able to demonstrate submersion (going under the water).

  • Enthusiasm to learn and work as part of a team

Course details

Day 1 (2 /12/19)

Participants to complete an introduction to Water Safety (classroom) session and a basic swimming course. Participants will be tested on their swim skill and submersion. So some swim skills are essential.


Day 2-4 (3/12/19 – 5/12/19)

The Teacher of Swimming and Water Safety training program will be delivered over these three days. Each day will be a mixture of theory and practical pool sessions. 


Day 5-8 (8/12/19 – 11/12/19)

The Pool Lifeguard and First Aid Course will be delivered. Each day will be a mixture of theory and practical pool sessions. 


The targeted training will be delivered by Royal Life Saving NSW, a registered training organisation.

On-the-job training

Approximately 20hrs on-the-job training and will be completed after the training has been completed. The on-the-job training can be longer if the participant feels they are not yet confident and can be discussed during the training placement.

The training hours can be completed at WLC or at another AUSTSWIM registered facility, but sign off must be at Willoughby Leisure Centre as part of completing the Aquatic Training Program.

Job Opportunities

On completion of this traineeship you are qualified to work as a swim teacher or a lifeguard at any aquatic facility in Australia. These two qualifications are the entry levels to working in aquatic facilities. The roles can lead to other training and work opportunities including Swim School On Deck Supervisors or Senior Lifeguard and Duty Manager roles.
